MOBILE, Ala. (WALAA sentry chicken used by the Mobile County Health Department to detect mosquito-borne diseases in the community has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV), officials said Friday.

The disease was confirmed in a chicken coop in the 36521 zip code area.

According to the MCHD, people infected with West Nile virus experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, nausea, neck stiffness, confusion, muscle weakness, paralysis, disorientation and seizures.

The risk of mosquito-borne encephalitis is highest from August until the first freeze of fall, health officials said.

MCHD’s Vector Services will increase spraying and conduct door-to-door surveys in the immediate area. Inspectors will also attempt to trap adult mosquitoes to test for West Nile virus, according to the health department.

To reduce the risk of exposure, health officials urge residents to:

• Use insect repellent that contains DEET
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
• Stay and sleep in areas with air conditioning or screened windows and doors
• Remove standing water around your home
