Warriors Almost Traded Karl-Anthony Towns Before Knicks Landed Him: Report

Golden State WarriorsThe active 2024 offseason was notable for the deals Golden State didn’t make as well as the transfers the team didn’t make.

Beyond allowing five-time All-Star and four-time champion swingman Klay Thompson to leave the Warriors for the Dallas Mavericks in a sign-trade, Golden State has actively pursued several All-Star trades and free agent targets.

Warriors team president Mike Dunleavy Jr. was known to be on the job. All-Star was interested in trading Utah Jazz combo forward Lauri MarkkanenBefore the 7-footer’s decision to sign a lucrative five-year, $238 million extension to remain on the lottery-bound roster for the long term.

Markkanen has been a solid individual performer but has yet to help Utah win a game this year. He’s averaging 18.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists on .385/.450/.852 shooting in four healthy games for the 0-5 Jazz this year.

Golden State apparently made an offer for the services of nine-time All-Star forward Paul George, but the 6-foot-1 Fresno State product instead opted to sign a four-year, $211.6 million max contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The oft-injured George is already injured and has yet to start a regular season game with Philadelphia this young season.

The Warriors opted to replace Thompson with great depth on the wing, adding former Sixers guards De’Anthony Melton and Buddy Hield as well as former Minnesota Timberwolves reserve forward Kyle Anderson.

Golden State is off to a promising 4-1 start, but due to an injury to All-NBA point guard Stephen Curry, the team’s ceiling is limited until he returns.

Now, it appears another impressive frontcourt star is being considered as a trade target for Dunleavy and co.

Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported that four-time All-Star center/forward Karl-Anthony Towns was also the subject of trade talks between Golden State and the Minnesota Timberwolves over the summer.

The New York Knicks eventually snapped him up because, as Slater revealed, it was considered a more desirable trade package.

It’s not hard to see why Towns would be appealing to the height-challenged Warriors. He’s a legitimate 7-footer who, along with Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert and Defensive Team small forward Jaden McDaniels, forms a formidable frontcourt defensive package in the Timberwolves’ 56-26 rout of the Western Conference Finals. spring.

Towns’ biggest asset is, of course, his offense. Warriors in second place NBA One game with 45 triple attempts. They carry out 39.1 percent of these initiatives. Towns is a 39.9 percent three-point shooter on 4.3 long-range attempts per night and is an elite scorer in the paint, around the mid-range and at the foul line. It could legitimately give the Warriors the opportunity to run a five-man offense without sacrificing the size of the midfield.

As it stands, the former No. 1 pick in 2015 NBA The draft is putting up unreal numbers for the 3-2 Knicks. He is averaging 22.5 points on an elite .585/.727/.952 scoring line, while also averaging 11.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.5 blocks and 0.5 steals.

Golden State will just have to bide its time and count its assets as it waits for its next All-Star trade target to be announced. If recent reports are to be believed, it looks like this could happen sooner…
