Bald, pointy-nosed former supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is at a crowded meeting

Image: Universal Pictures / Everett Collection

Type: Comedy
Working time: 1h 34min
Directors: Chris Renaud
Casting: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin

Reformed villain-turned-secret agent Gru is back with an all-new adventure! Despicable Me 4 He finds Gru’s family relocated when his old rival Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) reappears seeking revenge. While Gru’s family tries to adjust to their new home, Gru’s young neighbor tries to follow in his treacherous footsteps while Gru’s Minions decide to become superheroes. this one shareI know!

Despicable Me 4 It’s full of good ideas, and many of them specifically appeal to the things people love about these movies: the Minion antics, Gru’s evil versus normal family life, and the over-the-top Big Bad Guy theatrics in between. But all these little pieces are jumbled together and not coherent enough to make sense as a story. The film is discordant, like a group of musicians playing unusual instruments (or a group of – I should say – Minions are given instruments) and trying to make a coherent song. But in the midst of this chaos, sometimes the music starts to sound good; A cool, jazz-style saxophone solo briefly rises above the cacophony. You just have to grit your teeth and ignore the clanging drums and out-of-tune oboes around him.

Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is back and this time he’s got a girlfriend! Todd Phillips’ 2019 sequel Joker It takes place two years after the previous film; Arthur remains in custody at Arkham State Hospital, awaiting trial for murder. After meeting Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (Lady Gaga), Arthur finds himself torn between his attraction to her (and subsequently his attraction to the Joker) and his uncertainty about whether he wants to be the Joker anymore. The question is: Joker: Folie à Deux Are you going to put an end to it, or is this the act of Arthur’s story?

The truth is, whether Phillips wants to admit it or not, Phoenix’s exuberant framing of his performance, his devotion to ’70s grit and ’60s musical fantasy, is the conceit of a script that skips the punchline of a knock-knock joke. and he touts it as a smart character interpretation – these things aren’t as far from the cool, Easter egg-hiding, smug joker world of comic book cinema as he’d like to imagine. Joker and Folie à Deux are currently in production at Warner Bros. They are no less indulgent than other films owned by the Discovery conglomerate, building on a generational legacy of comic book artists for hire. Phillips just wants you to think so.
