The Substance, Joker: Folie à Deux and all new movies to be released

This sci-fi slasher from Netflix features time-consuming shenanigans. A high school senior (Madison Bailey) finds a time machine and travels to 2003 to save the older sister she never knew from a serial killer. There’s edgier horror, big time travel ripple effect questions, and plenty of early flashbacks too (like Heelys!). Plus, that trailer isn’t doing any favors for those of us who are a little afraid of being eaten by the escalator.

Apparently magic purple crayons have the same powers in the real world. Something that causes havoc and is also a treacherous librarian who tries to use the crayon for her own selfish purposes.

Planet Janet An interesting, silent film about the strange relationship between a lonely 11-year-old girl named Lacy and her free-spirited mother, Janet, over the course of a melancholy summer. Through Lacy’s eyes, we learn more about Janet and the close but almost codependent connection between mother and daughter. A film that captures a certain feeling of meditative loneliness on sweltering summer days.

Kevin Costner isn’t the only one releasing a new Western this year, as Viggo Mortensen is trying his hand at the genre. Dead Don’t Hurt It tells the story of Holger Olsen (Mortensen) and his girlfriend Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), who try to build a life together after returning home from fighting in the Civil War. Irreversibly changed by his experience, Holger must confront the ways in which he and Vivienne grew up in a brutal world where violence and wealth are the law of the land.

Despicable Me 4 It’s full of good ideas, and many of them specifically appeal to the things people love about these movies: the Minion antics, Gru’s evil versus normal family life, and the over-the-top Big Bad Guy theatrics in between. But all these little pieces are jumbled together and not coherent enough to make sense as a story. The film is discordant, like a group of musicians playing unusual instruments (or a group of – I should say – Minions are given instruments) and trying to make a coherent song. But in the midst of this chaos, sometimes the music starts to sound good; A cool, jazz-style saxophone solo briefly rises above the cacophony. You just have to grit your teeth and ignore the clanging drums and out-of-tune oboes around him.
