LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Jurors in the federal trial of former Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Brett Hankison worked overtime after telling the judge they were stuck earlier in the day.

Hankison is accused of violating the civil rights of Breonna Taylor and her neighbors by shooting through the closed windows of her apartment after her partner was shot. The jury sent a note to the judge during lunch on Nov. 1 saying they did not think they could reach a unanimous verdict.

The judge read to the jury what became known as the Allen Indictment. He tells the jurors to go back and continue deliberating. He also told them to read his instructions again. They deliberated for the rest of the afternoon.

These negotiations have been ongoing since Wednesday afternoon. The jury at Hankison’s federal trial in 2023 also was given the Allen Indictment, but ultimately failed to reach a verdict and the judge declared a mistrial.

This is the first day the jury has worked after 5 p.m. after receiving the case Wednesday afternoon. WAVE News has a team waiting to see what happens at the federal courthouse.
