CHICAGO (Wales) — New details about the suspect emerged Shooting injured Orthodox Jewish man in West Rogers Park.

The suspect, a 22-year-old from Chicago, now faces hate crime charges.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement tells ABC7 that Sidi Muhammad Abdellahi is a Mauritanian citizen who U.S. Border Patrol first encountered in the country last year. That’s why federal agencies are now involved in this investigation.

Chicago police announced new terrorism and hate crime charges against Abdellahi on Thursday. They say evidence on his phone shows he planned to attack people of the Jewish faith.

Now ICE is getting involved in the investigation, telling ABC7 it has requested the suspect be detained, meaning the agency must be notified if he is to be released.

“We know he’s not from Chicago, but determining the addresses, his residence when he got here… those are all things we continue to work on,” said CPD Supt. Larry Snelling.

Abdellahi has not yet appeared in court as he remains in intensive care due to the injuries he received in the clash with the police. The shooting happened just 20 minutes after he allegedly shot a 39-year-old man near North Washtenaw Boulevard.

ICE confirmed that Abdellahi was first located by the U.S. Border Patrol in March 2023 near San Ysidro, California.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said her team was not ready to comment on the suspect’s immigration status.

“At the next court date, we ask for the motion to be read in full with this level of detail, just like we did two days ago. We will make that information public next week,” Foxx said.

While local authorities continue to work with federal agencies on the investigation, Chicago police do not believe there is a broader terrorist threat involved.

“The evidence we have now indicates that he was working alone. We don’t want anyone to be afraid of a network of people engaged in this activity,” Snelling said.

While Abdellahi’s condition in the hospital continues, he is expected to appear in court again next week.

Additional federal charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
