Gretchen Whitmer backs Michigan Democrats as GOP seeks control of power

Despite heavy investments locally, intense campaigns have sucked much of the air out of the room for State House candidates, said Adrienne Pickett, a Democratic consultant and founder of The Guerrilla Politic, a Detroit-based organization. on the election of progressive women to state and local offices.

“It’s really hard for some of the down-ballot candidates to be successful because of all the noise,” Pickett said, adding that state legislative campaigns have been “stifled” by extensive media buys for presidential and congressional candidates in competitive districts.

In such a crowded field, that means Whitmer and other surrogates are focused on supporting the entire ticket, with the hope that that success will extend to state House candidates: “Every little bit helps.”

Snyder, who recently completed a bus tour campaigning in a dozen competitive House districts, said part of his motivation for returning to politics comes from seeing Democrats outright rejecting or moving away from actions he took while in office to put Michigan on a more competitive economic path.

“Michigan is in decline again, and the decline is accelerating,” the former governor said. “There are many factors, but one of the most important factors is what’s going on in Lansing.”

Snyder said he is optimistic about the chances of a House flip because Republican candidates have “good, strong track records” and are driven by a positive agenda of improving education and economic outcomes.

Snyder – who Endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020 -Unlike Whitmer, she has focused solely on campaigning for state House candidates and is not weighing in on the presidential contest.

“Even talking about anything above will cause people to lose interest in House races,” he told Bridge. “This is our backyard. This is our home. “We can make a much bigger impact.”

Pollster Czuba said House Democrats would have a chance to maintain their majority if Harris wins Michigan by at least two points and Democrats make significant gains in Oakland County, where there are several competitive races that trend Democratic.
