MDC corrections officer died in a traffic accident

BERNALILLO COUNTY, NM — A corrections officer at the Metropolitan Detention Center died in a car crash this week, Bernalillo County reported Friday.

The single-car crash happened Wednesday night on Shelley Drive SW near the I-40 frontage road. The crash claimed the life of Officer Raquel Sachs. He was only 19 years old.

Sachs graduated with the 252nd class of MDC students on September 6. About two weeks later he began serving as an officer.

“The Bernalillo County community, including the county commissioners, officers, Metropolitan Detention Center staff, and the warden’s office, offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Officer Raquel Sachs,” said Bernalillo County interim warden Shirley Ragin. “Our thoughts and prayers are also with the officers of MDC Cadet Class 252 who mourn this tragic loss.”

Warden Kai Smith added that Sachs has already made an impact on staff and his fellow officers in his short time. “The MDC has lost more than a dedicated civil servant; it has lost a member of its family,” the director said.

The district is offering counseling services to affected employees. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
