PHOENIX (AZ Family) — Police release body camera video of a person fatal officer-involved shooting The incident happened at a Phoenix store last month.

The shooting resulted in the death of 31-year-old Essex Jackson.

The incident began shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 20, when officers responded to a trespassing call at the Dollar Tree store near 37th and Glendale Streets. The 911 caller said the man, who reportedly had a large knife, appeared to be disabled and was scaring people in the store.

When they arrived, a store employee pointed out to officers the man, identified as Essex, who was seen on video walking away from them and toward a warehouse. Police followed him into the warehouse and found him climbing on top of the walk-in freezer.

Both officers pointed their stun guns at Essex and ordered him to get down. He followed their instructions until they tried to detain him; At that time, he was seen walking away and running towards the main part of the store.

The video shows one of the officers trying to grab Essex’s arm, but the woman loses control and falls against a display shelf. The other officer then tasered him and he was seen falling to the ground.

The officer’s body-worn camera showed that Essex immediately stood up and a struggle ensued. Police said the officer’s taser and body camera fell to the ground.

Later, another police officer and a security guard can be seen struggling with the suspect and trying to detain him. One of the officers picked up the Taser and shocked Essex again, before Essex was seen holding the officer’s hand.

At one point, Essex shouted “Please stop!” he shouts. and is seen holding the hand of the officer holding the Taser. He did not let go and the officer was seen falling backwards.

The video then shows Essex grabbing his stun gun and pulling the trigger, which apparently shocks both officers. Meanwhile, one of the police officers stood up and opened fire.

Support officers arrived to assist Essex until firefighters arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Both officers were taken to the hospital and released later that night, police said.

A fixed blade sheathed knife was seized at the scene.

Phoenix police said both officers were assigned to the Cactus Park District and served seven and five years, respectively. The investigation into the shooting continues.
