Sir Keir Starmer said the UK ‘stands with Spain’ after the floods that killed more than 200 people

Sir Keir Starmer said the UK “stands with Spain during this difficult time” after flash floods killed more than 200 people.

It is understood that the Prime Minister also contacted the Spanish Prime Minister to convey his condolences following the flood disaster this week.

In a post published on X on Friday afternoon, Sir Keir said: “My thoughts are with those who lost their lives, their families and everyone affected by the devastation caused by extreme flooding in Spain.”

It is thought that the Prime Minister also expressed his personal condolences to Pedro Sanchez after the flood disaster, in which the death toll increased.

It is thought that the UK is ready to offer all kinds of support, but it is not thought that there is any request for help at this stage.

“The Spanish people remain on the Prime Minister’s mind,” a Number 10 spokesman said on Friday.

“The UK Government offers its sincerest condolences to those affected by the tragic floods in Spain,” Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on Thursday.

“Our thoughts are with those who lost their lives, their families and everyone affected,” he wrote to X.

Spanish emergency officials confirmed on Friday that the death toll following flooding in Valencia earlier this week had risen to 205.

The Associated Press news agency reported that security forces and soldiers were searching for an unknown number of missing people, many still fearful of being trapped in wrecked vehicles or flooded garages.

Spain’s Mediterranean coast is used to autumn storms that can cause flooding, but this was the strongest flash flood in recent memory.

Scientists attribute this situation to climate change, which is behind increasing temperatures, droughts and the warming of the Mediterranean in Spain.

Arsenal Football Club’s Spanish manager Mikel Arteta also touched upon the floods in his speech to journalists on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Arteta spoke of the “terrible disaster” and added: “From our side, I want to send our thoughts, our full support and our sympathy to everyone affected, all the families, all the individuals. and of course the whole country is coming together to find the best possible solution in this difficult moment.”
