Falls Church man pleads guilty to hit and run on I-395

A Falls Church admitted leaving the scene hit a motorcyclist on I-395 earlier this year.

Fullas Abebe, 45, pleaded guilty yesterday (Thursday) in Arlington County Circuit Court to a felony hit-and-run charge.

A plea agreement recommends Abebe serve between one day and six months in prison. Otherwise, the maximum sentence on any sentence Judge Daniel Lopez imposes will be five years of active prison.

Abebe was initially charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing injury; this is a Class 5 felony punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison. State Law.

Video of the incident, shared on X by local public safety watchdog Dave Statter, shows a vehicle rear-ending a motorcycle while heading south on I-395 near the Pentagon in May.

The gray Honda Odyssey comes to a complete stop for a moment before swerving into another lane and speeding away from the collision.

“Mr. “The driver, Abebe, did not remain at the scene, exit his vehicle, leave information or attempt to assist the victim as required by law.”

A state trooper arrived at the scene and found the victim’s motorcycle on the ground, and witnesses attended to his serious injuries, the statement said. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for severe road rash and spinal fractures.

Meanwhile, motorcycle drivers traveling behind the accident began to chase the escaping driver. Virginia State Police said law enforcement was able to capture Abebe later that day thanks to “information provided by a witness to the crash.”

The statement of facts says Abebe “appeared to be intoxicated” when officers met him at his residence. However, driving while drunk is prohibited.

According to the document, Abebe asked the police, “Did I kill him? He put the brakes on me. Did I kill him? You can all lock me up.”

That’s when police noticed Abebe’s vehicle was damaged and the airbags had deployed. He was also injured in his leg.
