Believe it or not, Dragon House It almost failed. HBO was ready to cancel the Game of Thrones prequel before it even started. Crazy, right? The show is killing it today because of the near miss.

HBO has many features Game of Thrones spin-offs in the pipeline, but only sometimes. After Game of Thrones ended in 2019, it took time (perhaps too long) for the network to release new content. They even spent 30 million dollars A prequel pilot about the Long Night called Blood Moon was also canceled. Talk about brutal.

But Bloodmoon wasn’t the only one facing the axe. House of the Dragon was also close to being shelved, according to co-showrunner Ryan Condal. Condal declares “HBO will shelve this” until George R.R. Martin This was the story Martin wanted to tell most, and his passion saved the project from being lost in the archives.

Martin’s fingerprints are all over the Dragon House. Although he didn’t write the episodes as he did on Game of Thrones, Condal’s deep involvement as co-creator made a big difference. Let’s not forget that this is Martin’s world; he knows this better than anyone. His oversight ensured that the Fire and Blood adaptation on which House of the Dragon is based was more than a rough guide. Martin helped bring the necessary nuance and depth to a story that could quickly go off track.

Without Martin’s investment, we might have seen another failed prequel attempt or a mediocre product that failed to live up to Game of Thrones’ legacy. But with Martin’s guidance, House of the Dragon survived its difficult development and emerged as a nuanced, character-driven success.

This near-cancellation also underscores HBO’s careful approach to the Game of Thrones universe. They don’t rush. Not only are they making money off a beloved franchise, they’re also making sure the story is accurate. This level of restraint was demonstrated when they scrapped Bloodmoon and was reinforced once again with the potential scrapping of House of the Dragon.

What about the future of the series? Martin’s involvement is critical. If he’s guiding spinoffs like The Tales of Dunk and Egg, there’s hope that these stories will stay true to his vision. Let’s be honest; If he had been more involved in later seasons of Game of Thrones, perhaps this divisive ending would have had a slightly different impact.
