Update 10/31: Toyota unveiled the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept ahead of its debut at SEMA, showing off a series of extensive modifications that transform it from a practical five-door SUV into a two-door beach cruiser built for the sand.

Toyota gave its ladder-frame SUVs a pretty wild makeover for this year’s SEMA show. The Land Cruiser ROX Concept is the pickup version of the new SUV, redesigned with an arsenal of exclusive parts; The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept, on the other hand, is a beach-bound two-door throwback with a distinct ’80s vibe.

Starting with Land Cruiser ROX is the brainchild of Toyota’s Calty Design Research studio. Here, the team went all-in on the open-air look of Toyota’s next-generation off-roader, a machine designed to immerse passengers in the environment around them.

First, they cut off the C-pillar, destroyed the D-pillar, and abandoned the roof entirely. To prevent things from falling apart under pressure, they built a special frame to compensate for the lost rigidity. The panoramic roof with reclining fabric roof leaves nothing between you and the sky, while the work also includes special half doors without glass windows, wide wheel arch extensions and larger wheels with all-terrain tires.

The interior features blue-themed upholstery, cyan accents and waterproof wood-style flooring.

The concept retains the donor car’s turbocharged 2.4-liter powertrain, eight-speed automatic and full-time 4WD system. Changes include a louder exhaust, upgraded steering, special front axles, long-travel suspension and tundraWelded rear guard. Finally, off-road capabilities are further enhanced thanks to 37-inch tires wrapped around 17-inch rims.
