Unrivaled announces expansion to 36 players after outperforming financial forecasts

Unrivaled is expanding its roster before the inaugural season of its 3-on-3 women’s basketball league begins.

Co-founder Napheesa Collier announced on social media Thursday that the league will expand from 30 players to 36 players, allowing six players per team.

“We’re able to do this because we outperformed our financial projections and now we can do something we want to do in the future, which is to feature more people in Unrivaled,” Collier said in a social media video. “This is a great time in women’s sport and we are so grateful for all the positive people who came out and supported us.”

Over the past few months, Unrivaled has revealed a roster full of WNBA talent via social media. Indiana Fever’s Aliyah Boston is the 30th player announced Thursday, joining the likes of Brittney Griner, Jewell Loyd and Angel Reese.

Although the league is open to the WNBA Rookie of the Year award, one of the players who has not yet signed a contract is Caitlin Clark.

“We will always have a squad for Caitlin Clark,” unchallenged chairman Alex Bazzell told Sportico. “We don’t do full-court press like people think. We let him get away from the basketball. … He knows we’ll give him space when he’s ready.”

In early October, the league announced a multi-year partnership with TNT and sports platforms to show more than 45 games when the season begins in January. Matches will be shown three nights a week, and matches played twice a week will be shown on TNT on Mondays and Fridays. Games played on Saturday will be shown on TruTV.

The games will start on January 17 and will be played in Miami.

The league also announced the names of six teams earlier in the month: Laces Basketball Club, Mist Basketball Club, Phantom Basketball Club, Lunar Owls Basketball Club, Rose Basketball Club and Vinyl Basketball Club.
