Woman died, husband was seriously injured in M-50 accident

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A Napoleon woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured in a crash with a semi-truck Wednesday.

Ruth Ann Burnette, 80, died Oct. 30 from injuries sustained in the crash at the intersection of M-50 and Napoleon Road, according to the Napoleon County Police Department.

Police said investigators determined her husband, Gary Burnette, 79, was driving a Kia SUV southbound on Napoleon Road when the vehicle was struck by a westbound truck as he turned left onto M-50.

Police said eyewitnesses and dashcam footage of the truck showed that despite the truck driver’s attempt to swerve to avoid the Kia, the Kia exited the intersection when the trailer was too close to avoid the collision.

The Burnettes were taken for treatment to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, where Ruth Burnette was pronounced dead and her husband was in serious but stable condition, police said.

Police said the driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, was treated and released.

The road in Napoleon County was closed for two hours as crews removed the Burnettes from their vehicle and police investigated the scene.

Napoleon County Fire Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Community Ambulance and Garver’s Towing assisted at the scene.
