Wildfire season in Alberta ends Thursday, with nearly 90 fires recorded in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA).

During this season, CFA encountered 89 bushfires that burned 64.62 hectares. There is currently one active wildfire in the CFA classified as under control as of Thursday morning.

Alberta Wildfire warns that despite the change in season, wildfire danger is still moderate in the CFA.

“As the days get colder, cooking and warming fires help Albertans stay warm while enjoying the outdoors,” Alberta Wildfire said in an update Thursday.

“Remember to completely extinguish campfires when you are finished and never leave them unattended.”

Alberta Wildfire has warned that there remains a risk of wildfires starting until there is significant snow cover on the ground.

During the year, fire crews responded to 1,216 wildfires that burned more than 705,000 acres across the state.

The number of fires is up from 1,097 in 2023, but the area burned is down significantly from 2.2 million hectares last year.

As of Thursday morning, there were 27 active wildfires in Alberta, all classified as under control.

Wildfire Alberta says permits may no longer be required for burning safe burning practices should be kept in mind.

The Calgary Forest Area covers a large area in southwestern Alberta, extending from the Carstairs, Cochrane and areas west of Calgary to west of Pincher Creek.
