Millcreek Township police are asking people who use automated teller machines to report any unusual activity by other customers or evidence that someone has tampered with the ATM.

On Oct. 12, thieves stole a “reasonable amount” of cash from ATMs at two banks, one in Millcreek and the other in Erie. Millcreek police, who investigated the crimes, declined to identify which banks were located or the amount of money stolen.

Millcreek Police Capt. Donald Kucenski said unlike many other ATM thefts, the criminals did not steal money from any customers’ accounts. They stole the money from the ATM

“They used fake cards and a device that allowed them to withdraw money after withdrawing money from ATMs,” Kucenski said. “No one’s account could be accessed.”

The suspects are believed to be from out of town and passing through the area that day, Kucenski said.

Millcreek police continue to investigate the crimes. Kucenski declined to say whether video of the suspects is available, but said one thing people should look for when visiting an ATM is whether the camera lens is contaminated with a substance.

“If you see something that looks inappropriate at an ATM, contact your local police department,” Kucenski said. “This could be a vehicle that spends an extraordinary amount of time at the machine or a vehicle that repeatedly queues up after using the ATM.”

Kucenski also said people should contact police if they see someone physically trying to open an ATM or using multiple cards to make a transaction.

Tips when using an ATM

Although these thefts did not involve individual bank accounts, Kucenski recommended taking precautions when using ATMs. Here are some tips from the American Bankers Association:

• Protect your ATM card like a credit card or checkbook. Don’t leave it around the house or on your desk at work.

• Do not give out ATM information, including your PIN, over the phone. Your bank or credit union will not ask you for this.

• Be aware of the surroundings when using an ATM. If you observe any suspicious activity in the area, do not use the machine at that time. Only use well-lit ATMs.

• Have your ATM card in hand as you approach the machine. Don’t wait until you get it to take it out of your wallet or purse.

• Check out ATM possible scanning devices. Check the card slot for adhesive residue, scratches, damaged or warped parts, or loose/extra attachments. Also look for visible resistance when pressing the keypad. If you notice any of these, stop using the machine.

• Use your hand or body to protect the ATM keyboard while typing your PIN.

• Put your money in your pocket, wallet or purse immediately. Don’t stand by the ATM and count.

• Don’t forget to take your receipt with you.
