BIP general manager responds to $6.9 million grant announcement

PARKERSBURG, W.Va.. (WTAP) – Belpre Industrial Railroad has received a major grant for a bridge project.

Belpre Industrial Parkersburg (BIP) Railroad received a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration on Oct. 24 for projects related to the bridge connecting West Virginia and Ohio.

US Senator Joe Manchin announced that the grant is one of the projects in the US. A total of $29.7 million was donated.

He called this investment a great way to connect West Virginia communities and is confident it will bring more visitors and economic development.

The project will assist with final designs and repairs of two bridges in Ohio and West Virginia.

BIP executive director Dustin Heichel said this grant will be a great thing for the community.

“This is a work in progress,” Heichel said. “We had to deal with a lot of different people, and the Ohio Economic Development Group helped us a lot. This is a good thing for us. This is definitely a good thing for society and jobs.

Heichel adds that the grant will also greatly help rail service connecting West Virginia and Ohio.

“It will be very helpful to the Central Ohio Valley,” Heichel added. “It will help the rail service and emissions from trucks and things like that. “It is a great thing that we received this grant,” he said.
