Three teenagers have been charged in the murder of an Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy.

In June 2024, Oakland County Deputy Bradley Reckling was undercover trying to take down a serious car theft ring when he spotted and pursued a stolen car in Detroit.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said 18-year-old Raymone Debose fired from that car, killing Reckling. Also inside that car were 18-year-old Marquise Goins and 18-year-old Karim Moore.

In the announcement Wednesday, Oakland County and Detroit leaders acknowledged the arrests would not bring Reckling back, but it is a step toward closure.

Worthy said the auto theft ring he worked on was a large one, so much so that the case was charged as an ongoing criminal enterprise.

Deputy Bradley Reckling was working the auto theft unit in Detroit on June 22 and was pursuing a stolen vehicle when the suspects opened fire. He hit her multiple times and killed her..

Reckling was among three deputies from the auto theft unit who searched for a stolen 2022 Chevrolet Equinox. The vehicle was stolen from Red Oaks Water Park in Oakland County on Saturday, June 22, 2024, between 1:00 pm and 5:15 pm.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Reckling was in an unmarked car when he spotted the stolen vehicle and began pursuing it, meaning dashcam footage was not available. During the preliminary investigation, it was determined that the vehicle stopped suddenly, the people in the stolen vehicle got out of the vehicle and opened fire on Deputy Reckling. He was shot multiple times, including in the head and torso.

“The car stopped suddenly. The individuals got out of the stolen vehicle and opened fire on our deputy. This was an ambush. Frankly, this triggered a lot of things. The deputy was shot in the head, chest and torso area. At 22:50, the officer called down. Obviously, Detroit police and Michigan State Their police flooded the area very quickly; I want to thank and commend them for that,” Bouchard said at a press conference on June 23, 2024.

The officer’s call down was made at 10:50 p.m. Detroit police and Michigan State Police rushed to the scene and set up a perimeter. Three people were detained in that area.

Debose was indicted on the following charges:

• Murder of a police officer – maximum penalty of life in prison without parole or a minimum of 25 to 40 years and a maximum of 60 years in prison

• Receiving or concealing stolen property (motor vehicle) – maximum penalty of five years

• Four counts of Carrying a Concealed Weapon – maximum penalty of five years.

• Three counts of felony firearm – maximum sentence of two years and must be served consecutively

• Car theft – maximum sentence of life imprisonment

• Attempted crime: Maximum 20 years imprisonment

Goins was indicted on the following charges:

• Accessory to crime after the fact – maximum penalty of five years imprisonment

• Receiving or concealing stolen property (motor vehicle) – maximum penalty of five years

• Four counts of Carrying a Concealed Weapon – maximum penalty of five years.

• Three counts of felony firearm – maximum sentence of two years and must be served consecutively

• Car theft – maximum sentence of life imprisonment

• Attempted crime: Maximum 20 years imprisonment

Moore was indicted on the following charges:

• Accessory to crime after the fact – maximum penalty of five years imprisonment

• Receiving or concealing stolen property (motor vehicle) – maximum penalty of five years

• Four counts of Carrying a Concealed Weapon – maximum penalty of five years.

• Two counts of firearms offenses – maximum sentence of two years and must be served consecutively

• Car theft – maximum sentence of life imprisonment

• Attempted crime: Maximum 20 years imprisonment

All three are scheduled to appear in 36th District Court Thursday morning.

Remembering MP Bradley Reckling

Reckling has a pregnant wife, a 1-year-old child, a 4-year-old child and a 5-year-old child, according to Bouchard.

His family wanted the public to hear from people who worked with Reckling and knew who he was and what he was like. Reckling worked at the Rochester Hills substation and had recently transferred to the auto theft unit.

At the press conference in June, Bouchard read the following statements from Reckling’s colleagues:

Rochester Hills substation commander: “Detective Brad Reckling was one of the best cops and detectives I have ever worked with. He was one of the hardest working police officers I have ever known. He will be greatly missed by me and many others. He touched many people personally with his larger than life personality. Before Brad came to our detective agency there, he was on patrol in Rochester Hills and there was a bank robbery that some considered unsolvable. Brad spent hours researching the vehicle and eventually found it on sale on the Facebook marketplace, eventually opening the case for good. And that was just one example of Brad’s work ethic.”

Deputy Nicholas Bohun: “Brad was always there to lend a helping hand. He loved his family more than anything. “He was a great cop, but an even better friend, father and husband.”

Deputy Nathan Rogers: Brad and I grew up together in this department. From working in prison to working towards a promotion to graduating from the academy together. Brad was one of the most selfless colleagues I have ever seen and one of the most devoted husbands to Jackie and the best father to his daughters. There is no other way to describe him other than the best person.

Deputy Matthew Morrison: Brad was a loving husband, father and wonderful friend. He loved the outdoors. He was a great fisherman, loved hunting, and enjoyed growing his farm and raising animals. Brad spent several months redecorating his home to give his wife and three daughters the best place to call home. Anyone who knows Brad knows that it doesn’t take long for him to start cracking jokes and making her laugh. He was a great worker and a great friend who would do anything for anyone. He was the epitome of what a great parent, husband and friend means and he is loved by many and will be truly missed.
