The 37-year-old Bergen County man is the last of three men convicted in a scheme in which the trio stole more than $570,000 in Covid unemployment benefits.

After a five-day trial, a federal jury in Trenton found Jose Tavares of Englewood guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Jersey said Wednesday.

Tavares and two others used victims’ names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers to create online profiles and apply for unemployment insurance benefits from July 2020 to February 2021, prosecutors said.

The New York Department of Labor approved the applications and the trio received debit cards, which they used to withdraw money from ATMs in New Jersey and New York. They also spent the illegally obtained money on vacations, luxury retail purchases and plastic surgery, authorities said.

Yanira Abreu, 43, of Woodbridge’s Keasbey district, and Christopher Valerio, 34, of Perth Amboy, previously pleaded guilty.

The trio communicated using WhatsApp, an encrypted text and voice messaging app, according to court documents. The documents did not explain how they obtained the victims’ Social Security numbers or dates of birth.

Abreu was sentenced to two years in prison in May, while Valerio was sentenced to two years and six months in April.

Tavares is scheduled to be sentenced on March 4.

The three were arrested and charged in December 2021.
