Deputy Transport Minister Hassan Tampuli said there was no justification for increasing transport fares while discussions about a possible price increase were ongoing among some transport unions, including the Concerned Drivers Association.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, October 30, Tampuli touched on these concerns and emphasized that current conditions point to a possible decrease in transportation fees rather than an increase.

“There is no basis for any increase in truck rates between now and the next six months. Ghana is one of nine countries where oil prices are below $1. Our prices in Ghana are among the lowest in the world.

“This message should go out to the driver unions who are threatening to raise truck wages.”

He called on transport unions to reconsider their stance by threatening wage increases and reinforced that the government would not support unfair wage increases.

Tampuli’s comments came in response to growing public concern about potential increases in transportation costs that could burden passengers at a time of economic difficulties.
