Covenless witch Agatha Harkness and the Scarlet Witch’s son, Billy Maximoff, have reached the end of Witches Lane in the two-part finale of “Agatha All Along,” and little is as it first seems. .

Episodes titled “Follow Me, My Friend / To Victory at Last” and “The Virgin Mother Crone” revealed the truth about how the Witches’ Path was created, who wrote the Ballad that brought it into existence, and what really happened to events. Agatha’s son, Nicholas Scratch. Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) helped Billy (Joe Locke) locates her twin brother Tommy, Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) discovers how her power has been tied to her for 100 years, and Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), a.k.a. Lady Death, collects (almost) all the bodies she wants.

But almost none of this actually came to light. It is revealed that the Way of the Witches is not real, the Ballad has no meaning, Tommy’s whereabouts are unknown, Jennifer was completely wrong about who was responsible for binding him, and Nicholas’ tragic fate has nothing to do with the Darkhold or Mephisto. (Probably. More on this later.)

The sleight of hand behind these explanations subtly evoked a kind of witchcraft narrative, where we expected witchcraft to reveal the truth hidden behind the veil of our expectations. Well, some people’s expectations. If you’re the kind of viewer who enjoys scouring the internet for fan theories or coming up with your own hypotheses, then you’ve probably encountered some, but not all, of the twists and turns in these latest episodes. But “Agatha All Along” dramatized them with such intelligence and thoughtfulness that it was more gratifying than disappointing to learn that these theories were true.

Additionally, the decisions in this story trigger many interesting questions about the future for Billy, Agatha, Jennifer, and Rio. Here are the key highlights:

Jennifer discovers Agatha has her tied up

Trapped in the final hearing, Jennifer learns that she was accidentally tied up by Agatha while passing through town, instead of a bad Boston obstetrician. Enraged, Jennifer immediately grabs a lock of Agatha’s hair and performs a ritual of untying the bonds, which mostly consists of repeating “You’ve got nothing” over and over in Agatha’s face. After getting her powers back, Jennifer disappears; The next time we see him, he’s climbing out of the ground just outside Westview and flying off to parts unknown.

His future in the MCU is uncertain; He crosses paths with Doctor Strange in the comics, but he doesn’t cross paths with other MCU characters much outside of the 2022 Disney+ special “Werewolf in the Night.” But given her love for Billy and her seemingly cosmic connection with Agatha, Jennifer may resurface soon.

Billy created Witches’ Path

Just as Billy’s mother Wanda unwittingly crafted the world of the sitcom “WandaVision” as a way to escape her pain, it turns out that Billy was so desperately searching for a way to find his brother Tommy that he called all the Witches. ‘ The road itself. All the details—the Nancy Myers beach house, the Ouija board horror house, the fairytale castle—came from pop culture details shuffled around Billy’s impeccably tidy bedroom. To Billy’s dismay, this meant that the deadly nature of the trials that led to the deaths of Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp), Alice (Ali Ahn), and Lilia (Patti LuPone) were also his doing.

This presents some fascinating wrinkles for Billy’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She is indeed as powerful and dangerous as her mother, and carries the guilt she carries for the death of her community (although Agatha points this out). he (where he killed Alice and Lilia chose to die) will likely focus on how Billy chooses to apply his magic moving forward.

He wrote The Ballad of Agatha with his son

Much of “The Virgin Mother Crone” is spent dramatizing Agatha’s life with her son Nicholas in the 1750s. When Rio appears in the middle of giving birth to Agatha, Agatha begs for her son’s life; Rio says the only thing he can offer her is more time, but he doesn’t say how long. Over the next six years, Agatha uses Nicholas to steal the life force of other witches from her prisoners, and together they write a song about walking along the “winding path” that eventually becomes “the witches’ path.” It became a legend. Eventually, Rio takes Nicholas’ life during the night due to an unspecified illness (he eventually appears ill and has a foreboding cough). Agatha is distraught and more willing than ever to manipulate the other witches (now using Ballad as bait) into draining them of their powers—another example of how “Agatha All Along” discovered the “trick” in her “magic trick.”

But there are still some unanswered questions about Nicholas. When Agatha was born, she describes how he created her “from scratch” rather than using a spell or incantation; but it is unknown who fathered Nicholas, if at all. Likewise, it’s unclear whether Rio is acting of his own volition or under the directives of a more powerful force, such as Mephisto, the Marvel comics villain who constantly haunts the Maximoff family. Speaking of harassment…

Agatha gives her life to protect Billy and haunt him too

In their final encounter with Rio, Billy volunteers his own life to save Agatha’s, which Agatha gladly accepts, until Billy telepathically asks Agatha if Nicholas died that way. This memory is enough for Agatha to realize that just as she couldn’t save Nicholas, she could have saved Billy’s life; He hadn’t even been able to say goodbye to her since Rio had taken him away at night. He kisses Rio, falls to the ground and dies.

But — Happy Halloween! – returns as a ghost, still unable to cross over to the afterlife to confront Nicholas. Instead, she returns to Billy, who is not only the son she never had, but also the magic partner she will never be able to keep.

Tommy’s alive but he’s living a terrible life

In the episode “Follow Me, My Friend / To Glory at Last”, Agatha helps Billy connect with Tommy’s soul and place him in a new body. But unlike Billy, Tommy’s new life is challenging: The body he lives in has been drowned in a cruel swimming pool prank, and Billy realizes in a panic: “There’s no one to love him!” He has no one!” (In the comics, Tommy, reincarnated as Tommy Shepherd, actually led an unforgiving life before reuniting with Billy.)

At the end of the series, ghost Agatha and Billy set out into the world to find Tommy. This story is expected to be addressed in the coming seasons as well. Vision series with Paul Bettany or at some point between now and the next two “Avengers” movies — given that Tommy, a.k.a. Speed, is an integral part of the Young Avengers in the comics.
