UPI Lite auto-top-up feature and new limits: How November updates will simplify small payments

Starting November 1, 2024, managing your UPI Lite balance will become easier thanks to the new auto-top-up feature. This upgrade offered by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will provide a seamless payment experience by automatically reloading your UPI Lite account when the balance falls below a certain threshold.

Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the transaction limit of UPI Lite. This is expected to be available soon.

How does UPI Lite auto-upload work?

The auto-upload feature allows users to set a predetermined balance threshold; When this threshold falls below, a user-selected amount is automatically recharged to the account.

This will support fast, PIN-free payments under ₹500.

Here’s how it works:

  • UPI Lite automatically tops up the account when it falls below the selected minimum balance.
  • Users can set up an autoload instruction within their UPI app, authorizing the app to deduct money from their bank account and reload their UPI Lite balance as needed.
  • Users retain control with the option to revoke authorization at any time. Additionally, automatic uploads are limited to five transactions per day, allowing for controlled use. Designed to make small payments easier, UPI Lite eliminates the need for PIN verification for transactions below ₹500. Users open UPI applications and complete payments without activating the bank’s basic systems.

This feature is especially useful for quick, low-value transactions and is ideal for everyday shopping.

Increased limits for UPI Lite

To encourage wider adoption, RBI recently announced that UPI Lite limits have been increased:

The limit per UPI Lite transaction has been adjusted to increase from ₹500 to ₹1,000. The maximum balance in UPI Lite wallet will increase from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000.

The daily transaction limit remains at ₹4,000.
