NEW YORK — Two New York Yankees fans who were ejected from Game 4 of the World Series for interfering with Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts were banned from Game 5 on Wednesday night.

Betts jumped the wall in foul territory and caught the butt of Gleyber Torres in the first inning Tuesday night, but a fan wearing a gray Yankees jersey at first grabbed Betts’ glove with both hands and stripped the ball out. Another fan grabbed Betts’ gloveless hand.

The first fan told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday that he was “too passionate” and “probably crossed the line.”

Austin Capobianco, a 38-year-old fan from Connecticut, said he tried to steal the ball from Betts to help his favorite team.

“I’m an extremely passionate fan and I probably crossed the line last night,” Capobianco said in a text message to the newspaper. “All I wanted to do was prevent this from becoming a breakout.”

In an interview with ESPN after the game, Capobianco said that his and seatmate John Peter’s actions were pre-planned.

“In our area, we always joke about the ball,” the season ticket holder said, according to ESPN. “If it’s in our area, we go to D. One is defending, the other is kicking the ball. We are talking about this. We are ready to do this.”

The Yankees called the fans’ behavior “horrible and unacceptable.”

“Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but the enthusiasm to support one’s team never crosses the line into intentionally placing players at physical risk,” the team said in a statement Wednesday. “The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding the behavior exhibited last night. These fans will not be allowed to attend tonight’s game in any way.”

The Major League Baseball Players Association also expressed concerns about the safety and security of players.

“As with any incident affecting players, we have been in regular contact with league security officials since last night’s incident and will closely monitor the response to this incident and the protective measures taken moving forward starting tonight.” The union said in its statement:

At the time of the incident, the Dodgers had a two-run lead on Freddie Freeman’s two-run homer. Betts reacted angrily to the play and Torres was immediately summoned over fan interference.

“When it comes to the person in the game, it doesn’t matter,” Betts said after the Yankees extended the series with an 11-4 victory. “We lost. It’s irrelevant. I am good. He’s fine. Everything is fine. We lost the game and that’s what I focused on. We must turn the page and prepare for tomorrow.”

This was the second time in this World Series that Torres had a hit affected by fan interference. With two outs in the ninth inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium, Torres threw a fly ball to left field where a fan reached out and caught the ball. Torres was given a double award.

Torres then hit a three-run homer to right field for New York’s final runs.
