Brooklyn Nets returned to their winning streak by beating the Memphis Grizzlies 119-106. According to Sans Nic Claxton, Brooklyn’s problems continued throughout the season, but they were outweighed by the consistent performances of its biggest stars.

Tuesday night’s three-point drive didn’t translate into the first quarter against Memphis, but solid officiating did. Ben Simmons received two fouls in the first two minutes of the game, and coach Jordi Fernandez was assigned as coach for not accepting an offensive foul on Cam Thomas. Nothing seemed to be going right for the Nets until late in the quarter when they were injured inside by Zach Edey.

A steal and slam by former Grizzlies forward Ziaire Williams set the foundation for momentum for Brooklyn, which finished the quarter on an 18-5 run. The Nets connected on seven of their last nine attempts, including a deep 3-pointer and an alley-oop finish by Noah Clowney. Even without the starting center, Brooklyn took a 34-29 lead into the second quarter.

Williams’ fingerprints were all over the next 12 minutes of action, converting multiple fast-break dunks even though his deep ball didn’t drop early. Brooklyn showcased Fernandez’s up-tempo offense, forcing Memphis to commit 15 turnovers in two quarters. However, the Nets conceded only 10 points on miscues, preventing them from maintaining their lead.

The teams traded buckets and Jaren Jackson Jr. as Edey continued to feast inside. warmed up from behind the arc. The Grizzlies’ frontcourt duo combined for 31 points in the first half, but thanks to solid performances from Thomas, Dennis Schröder and Cam Johnson, Brooklyn took a five-point advantage into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Nets had early highs and late lows. Brooklyn went on a quick 8-0 run to push the lead to 14, but it started to fall apart from then on. Nets, Jackson Jr. and as he subdued Edey, Brandon Clarke emerged.

The 28-year-old forward from Memphis brought an immediate spark off the bench, crushing Brooklyn in the paint. Whether it was a sharp turn from the baseline or excellent use of his own lane in transition, his contribution put the Grizzlies back within striking distance. A scoring drought that lasted almost five minutes, during which Simmons picked up his fifth foul, didn’t help the Nets’ chances of maintaining their once-comfortable lead. At the end of the third quarter, Keon Johnson was given his second technical foul and his night was cut short with just 16 minutes of action. Despite the dramatic collapse, Brooklyn still found themselves ahead by one point with the final stanza to play.

Unlike their previous losses, the Nets did not let a tough third quarter determine the outcome of the contest. The offense has been revitalized, thanks in large part to the consistent play of Jalen Wilson and the follow-up to Schröder’s monster 33-point night. Memphis had no answer to Fernandez’s balanced attack, allowing the rookie head coach to come off the bench to secure the victory.

In their first meeting since Brooklyn beat the Milwaukee Bucks, Tyrese Martin, Jaylen Martin and Cui Yongxi closed out the Nets’ victory. Five Nets were in double figures when the final whistle blew, and Williams had the last laugh in the revenge game.

Brooklyn, currently at 2-3, will return to Barclays Center on November 1 to face the Chicago Bulls at 7:30 PM EST.
