DETROIT (AP) — Detroit police are conducting an internal investigation after Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams Authorities said he was not locked up after the traffic stop, even though he had a gun under his seat that he did not have a permit to carry.

Commander Michael McGinnis testified that Chief James White was “extremely unhappy with the totality of the conditions here.” he told WXYZ-TV.

According to the television channel, the gun is registered in Williams’ name, but he does not have a concealed carry permit.

Without a permit in Michigan, the gun owner is often forced to put the gun in a closed box in the vehicle. Violation is a crime.

Williams was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car on October 8. Williams was a passenger in a car driven by his brother, who had his own gun and a concealed carry permit, WXYZ reported.

“I play for the Lions, bro. “I’m Jameson Williams,” Williams said, according to body camera video obtained by the television station.

He said he lived in Detroit and needed a gun for protection.

“I believe there was probable cause for the arrest and he was arrested by the patrol officer,” McGinnis said. “And so he should have been transported to the Detroit Detention Center and processed.”

However, Williams was released after a sergeant arrived and spoke to other senior officers on the phone. The gun was also returned.

The traffic stop appeared to be closed until WXYZ started asking questions. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office said it is currently reviewing the case for possible charges.

“We don’t know at this time,” prosecutor Kym Worthy said at an unrelated news conference Wednesday.

The Detroit Police Department said in a statement: “Let’s be clear: No one in the city of Detroit is above the law. “Everyone who commits a crime will be held accountable, regardless of their position and status.”

Williams’ attorney, Todd Flood, argued that no laws were broken because Williams’ brother had a concealed carry permit that covered both guns.

“We have cooperated with law enforcement and will continue to do so,” Flood said.
