AUSTIN, Texas — The Army is investigating the death of a Fort Bliss soldier injured in a training accident Saturday.

Sergeant. Christopher Sutton, 26, was a 47-year-old truck driver.This He was with Brigade Support Battalion and participating in a training exercise when he was injured, according to Fort Bliss officials. The statement made by the base did not include any details about how Sutton’s injuries occurred.

He was medically evacuated to University Medical Center in the nearby town of El Paso in critical condition and died shortly after arrival, base officials said.

The Army Combat Readiness Center at Fort Novosel, Ala., is investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Battalion commander Lt. Col. Jed Hudson said in a statement that Sutton was a valued member of the unit and a “leader of the highest caliber.”

“He was an expert at his job, always reliable and made a positive impact wherever he went. “We collectively mourn his loss and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Sutton enlisted in November 2019 from Honolulu, Hawaii, and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., according to his service record. Deployed to Poland from June to September 2022.

His military training included the Basic Leader Course, Unit Armorer Certification Course, and Field Clearance Team Training. His awards and decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
