A police officer in Michigan helped escort a pregnant mother and her fiancé to a local hospital after learning the woman had given birth.

Mary Weertz went into active labor on Thursday, October 17. ABC affiliate WXYZ And Fox affiliate WJBK. So she and the baby’s father, Austin Sadowski, headed to the hospital.

The couple was near Hall Road and Van Dyke Boulevard when Officer Liz Demuynck of the Utica Police Department spotted them making an illegal turn.

But Sadowski didn’t want to stop and called 911 and explained the situation, WXYZ and WJBK reported. He eventually pulled over and met Demuynck, who immediately understood the couple’s urgency.

Demuynck, herself a mother of two, told Sadowski to “move on,” according to WJBK. Meanwhile, he took out his radio and informed his colleagues that he would accompany the couple to the hospital.

“I think that really got me going: get him out there and keep him safe,” Demuynck told WXYZ.

Arriving at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, Demuynck helped the couple get inside. Sadowski was still afraid of being pulled over.

“Do you need my license for anything?” “No, you’re okay, take care,” Sadowski recalled Demuynck asking, according to WJBK.

According to WXYZ, baby Henry was born at 23:10 local time.

The officer and his family had been in contact since Henry’s birth. Demuynck was happy to help Weertz and Sadowski in their time of need.

“It’s a very scary thing to be a mother and be able to put yourself in her shoes about what you go through when you’re giving birth to a baby,” the officer told WXYZ. “Things can change very quickly.”

Weertz and Sadowski are also grateful for Demuynck’s help. “He was our family hero,” Sadowski said.
