Watch the moment convicted gunman opened fire on mourners during teenage stabbing victim’s funeral

A man has been found guilty of attempted murder after shooting at mourners at the funeral of a teenage knife crime victim.

Four people were injured, three teenagers were shot and a 14-year-old girl was trampled in the chaos in the shooting outside St Mary’s Church Hall on Hamstead Road, Lozells.

Mourners had gathered to remember the life of 17-year-old Akeem Bailey, who was stabbed to death in October 2022.

Meshaq Berryman was found to have opened fire on mourners from the rear passenger seat of a stolen Nissan Qashqai on February 24, 2023.

West Midlands Police (WMP) released CCTV footage of the incident showing mourners running for their lives.

Berryman was found guilty of three counts of attempted murder following a three-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court earlier this year.

He had previously admitted possession of crack cocaine and cannabis for the purpose of supply after police found more than 40 drug wraps and a set of digital scales when they searched his home.

He will be sentenced on December 6.

Another man was cleared of three attempted murder charges on October 29, following a trial that began earlier this month.

Det Insp Francis Nock, of the WMP Major Crime Team, said: “This was a targeted attack on a group of people who had come to pay their respects to a young man who had lost his life as a result of a violent crime.

“Although the dead teenager was not affiliated with gangs, Berryman believed that people affiliated with gangs would be found after him.

“This could easily have been a triple murder investigation and it was truly fortunate that people were not killed that evening.

“We have deployed a number of police officers to the investigation to make sure we have a really clear picture of what happened.

“CCTV, mobile phone and forensic evidence show Berryman was in the car at the time of the shooting and he now faces many years behind bars.”
