Bangladesh fall to 38-4 in reply to giants South Africa

Forced to play early due to bad light, the home team led 38-4 as Mominul Haque (six) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (four) continued play on Thursday.

Bangladesh are trailing for 537 after a dominant performance from the visitors, who gifted maiden Test centuries to three batsmen, including Tony de Zorzi, who was dismissed on 177 before lunch.

Kagiso Rabada clipped Shadman Islam for a duck in the first innings after change, with the left-hander edged a delivery that went down the leg side.

Zakir Hasan also played a Rabada-length ball outside, came to the goalkeeper and left the two-man game.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy top-scored with 10 and then fell to Dane Paterson outside off but only got a thick edge to Aiden Markram at second slip.

Hasan Mahmud came on early as night watchman but was fooled by Keshav Maharaj’s sharp turn in the first over of the ball.

South Africa’s total was their second highest, behind 583-7 against Bangladesh at the same ground in 2008.

Wiaan Mulder (105 not out) joined De Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs (106) to hit his first hundred on the field with little help from the bowlers.

Senuran Muthusamy remained unbeaten on a Test-best 68 off 75 balls with five fours and two sixes.

Ryan Rickelton was the only batsman to fall in the second session when he dodged Nahid Rana’s delivery that shaped off his body towards the keeper and headed for 12.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam claimed his second five-wicket haul of the series as he edged the visitors with three wickets in three overs in the morning.

He bowled David Bedingham to leg stump to end a 116-run stand for the third wicket with De Zorzi.

Bedingham departed after amassing a brisk 59 off 78 balls with two fours and four sixes.

The wicket led to a minor collapse as De Zorzi crossed the line and was trapped lbw by Taijul to leave South Africa 391-4.

The opener hit a total of four sixes and 12 fours in his 269-ball innings.

South Africa won the opening test in four days as fast bowler Rabada took 6-46 in the second innings.

Bangladesh played 24 Tests in Chattogram but won only two, with seven drawings.
