Americans’ perceptions of U.S. crime have increased since last year, Gallup poll finds

A recent poll shows Americans’ views on crime in the country have improved compared to their feelings in 2023.

According to Gallup, public perceptions on the issue have changed; 64% now say national crime has increased in the past year; This means a 13 point drop in their sentiment in 2023. Political parties polled by Gallup are divided in their views on crime; Democrats (29%) believe crime is increasing, while fewer independents agree.

But 60 percent of Democrats say there is less crime in the United States now than in 2023, while Republicans (90%) say crime is increasing.

Additionally, 78% of Republicans believe crime is an extremely or very serious problem in the United States, compared to 35% of Democrats.
