Morning Coffee: New York teams locked out during historic sports equinox

For fans who love betting on sports for fun, Sports Equinox is the ultimate buffet experience.

Unfortunately for baseball, football, basketball and soccer fans in New York, there wasn’t any reason to celebrate during Monday’s Sports Equinox.

Freddie Freeman reached his goal once again as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees 4-2 to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series.

The Dodgers became the first team to lead the World Series 3-0 since the San Francisco Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers in 2012.

Teams with a 3-0 lead in a World Series, the best of seven World Series, are 24-0 overall.

21 of the 24 teams that took a 3-0 lead won.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the New York Giants, New York Knicks and New York City FC also lost on Monday.

If you’re a fan of any of these teams and reading this column, hopefully you followed the FanDuel Morning Coffee Best Bet and came away with at least one winner.

Otherwise, I’ll be behind you this morning with another game.

This is Morning Coffee for Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

New York Teams Closed at Historic Sports Equinox

The Dodgers are one win away from their eighth championship in team history.

As an underdog with a +122 moneyline going into tonight’s Game 4, they can clinch the championship with another win tonight.

An unprecedented comeback for the Yankees begins with securing the first victory tonight.

If they fail tonight, the Dodgers will celebrate the title with Freeman winning the World Series MVP after his stellar performance in the first three games.

In the meantime, it will be interesting to see what happens next for NFL teams in the New York area.

The Giants fell to 2-6 with an ugly 26-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.

The Jets are already 2-6 after five straight losses.

Interestingly, the Jets are a 1.5-point favorite in this week’s game against the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football.

It’s not often we see a 2-6 team listed as a betting favorite against a 6-2 team, but this is a testament to the kind of season it’s been for the JETS.

We enter Week 9 of the NFL after a 3-0 lead with Monday Night Football betting, which includes the Same Game Parlay in this column.

With 48 hours until the start of Week 9, it makes sense to highlight the FanDuel Best Bet in this column for another loaded slate of sports you can watch live on TSN and TSN+ tonight.

Tonight’s TSN schedule includes a pair of NHL games, a pair of NBA games, the MLS playoffs and an NCAA football game.

It’s not a Sports Equinox, but you can find a little bit of everything on the network tonight.

For my FanDuel Best Bet, I’ll lock in the Same Game Parlay+, which features a pair of NBA games you can watch on TSN tonight.

First up, the Minnesota Timberwolves will host the Dallas Mavericks in a matchup that will feature Luka Doncic and Anthony Edwards, two of the top five picks to win the NBA regular season MVP on FanDuel.

Minnesota is currently a five-point favorite on FanDuel, and while the focus will be on the MVP candidates, I think another star has the potential to steal the show.

In two games against the Timberwolves last season, Kyrie Irving averaged 35.5 points per game.

He’s averaged 20.0 points through the first three games of this season, and his points prop on FanDuel is currently over/under 21.5 points.

I’ll be locking in on Irving getting 15+ points in tonight’s games as the first leg of my SGP+.

The second leg of this SGP+ features Buddy Hield for the Golden State Warriors scoring 10+ points in the last game against the New Orleans Pelicans on TSN.

Hield averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in his first three games with the Warriors.

After scoring 22 and 27 points in his first two games, he lost by just 8 points against the Los Angeles Clippers, but was 3/14 from the field.

With Steph Curry out and Andrew Wiggins questionable with a back injury, Golden State will need Hield to come up with a big offensive performance against the Pelicans.

A bigger role and the home crowd should lead to a strong showing from Hield, who is currently the sixth choice to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award at +1400.

As the second leg of my SGP+, I’ll give Hield a 10+ rating.

Finally, let’s finish the SGP+ with the Los Angeles Kings to beat the San Jose Sharks in the final game of the NHL.

The Sharks are coming off an epic comeback win against the Utah Hockey Team last night.

San Jose fell behind 4-1 in the third period, then rallied for a +215 miss to beat Utah in overtime.

While impressive, the Sharks are still 1-7-2 and will have to host the Kings on short rest just 24 hours after picking up their first win of the season.

Los Angeles is the far superior team, and with the remaining leverage, I’m counting on Anze Kopitar and friends to get things done on the short trip to San Jose tonight.

Give me the Kings to win outright as my last SGP+ leg.

To recap, Irving has 15+ points, Hield has 10+ points, and the LA Kings (not the Sacramento Kings) should win outright at SGP+ with +100 odds.

The FanDuel Best Bet for Tuesday’s NBA/NHL rankings has been announced.
