Although they didn’t plan it, the four friends believe their marathon efforts could transform the region’s reputation and show that positive stories can emerge from the Holy Land.

Eoin Killen said: “It’s a good message to send. A group of just four students run 42km around the Holy Land.

“If that gives a slightly better reputation and a better message about the Holy Land, so be it.”

An experienced runner, Cormac has completed numerous ultramarathons, including the challenging 106-mile Norn Iron trail run and the 50-mile Wicklow Ecotrail in the Republic of Ireland.

He said: “A few weeks ago we were sitting in the living room and decided to do a marathon.”

The young men mapped out their route, running up and down every street and alley, stopping at home for water and snacks.

Cormac led the other three, who despite being fit and active had never done a full marathon before.

Eoin said: “I had to really dig deep towards the end. I would say I needed a lot of help from the lads in the last 7km (four miles) just to say ‘Let’s get this done’.”

Shane Quinn found it even more difficult and said “about half of my calves went through”.
