Robert Lawton Williams

Robert Lawton Williams, 86, of Lookout Mountain, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

He was born on March 27, 1938 in Chattanooga. A dedicated patriot, RL devoted much of his life to serving his country, both military and civilian. RL had a distinguished career of more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, where he served in multiple branches, including Infantry, Medical Service, Armor, Inspector General, and General Staff. His service included a one-year assignment in the Republic of Vietnam. He retired with the rank of colonel (O-6), reflecting his outstanding leadership and dedication. After retiring from the military, RL continued to serve in federal assignments, serving mostly in San Antonio and Kentucky.

His civilian career began at NASA, where he spent more than four years writing and negotiating contracts. He later contracted with the Department of Defense (CONUS) for more than 16 years, including a six-month deployment to Tikrit, Iraq, when he was 72 years old. His work took him to various assignments, including the Pentagon and Redstone Arsenal. He excelled as a contract manager.

RL’s education was as impressive as his career. Bell attended The Webb School in Buckle, Tennessee, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee and a master’s degree from Texas A&M University. He continued his military education at the U.S. Army War College and completed his master’s degree in civil engineering. RL was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

His ambitions were as varied as his achievements; He enjoyed boxing, kite flying, running, hiking and swimming. Above all, he loved sports, people and animals. RL embraced life with enthusiasm and kindness and left a lasting impact on those lucky enough to know him. RL lived a life of service, adventure, and joy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elliott Williams, and nieces, Sarah McKenzie, Nancy Stagmaier and Mary Fritsche.

Graveside services with military honors will be held on Thursday, October 31, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Michele Simmons officiating. Prior to the service, a reception will be held on Thursday, October 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Talbird Hall at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 211 Franklin Road, Lookout Mountain.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
