LOS ANGELES – Lamont Campbell, 51, accused of hijacking a Metro bus from South Los Angeles to downtown Los Angeles and fatally shooting an innocent passenger, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Campbell was expected to enter a plea at Tuesday’s hearing.

He is accused of shooting Anthony Rivera after he tried to rob him. He then took over the bus and led police on a chase, eventually being arrested by the SWAT team, prosecutors said.

Investigators say it all started around 1 a.m. on Sept. 25 when the Los Angeles Police Department received a report of a shooting at S. Figueroa Avenue and Imperial Highway in the Vermont Vista neighborhood of South Los Angeles. A short time later, officers received information that a southbound bus had been hijacked on Figueroa Street.

Video taken at the scene shows LAPD officers following the bus at slow speed while the bus driver is held hostage by an armed man. The tracking took approximately 1 hour.

Investigators said some passengers were able to get off the bus during the pursuit.

The bus driver, who was behind the barrier, was able to press the mute button, which notified emergency crews and the LAPD.

After multiple spike strips were deployed, the bus eventually stopped on Alameda Street between 6th and 7th streets; There were four people inside: Campbell, the bus driver and two passengers.

As the hostage situation continued to develop, Rivera, who was shot multiple times, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

A celebration of life was held for Rivera a few days later.

Rivera had a number of jobs, including being a parking attendant at Dodger Stadium, where he was located the night he was killed.

“He was a great man and he didn’t deserve to go this way,” said Marylou Mulero, Rivera’s cousin.
