Man killed in Springfield Twp and woman killed in separate shootings in Summit Lake identified

Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office identifies Springfield Township shooting victim Halloween party Sunday as Brian Cofer, 39, of Akron.

Authorities were called to the 1400 block of Canton Road around 12:15 a.m. for a report of a shooting. When they arrived at the scene, they found one man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and another injured.

Cofer died from his injuries at the hospital. The second victim injured in the attack continues to receive treatment in hospital.

This investigation is ongoing.

The woman found shot in the Summit Lake area on Sunday has been identified

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office also identified the woman found shot in Summit Lake as 44-year-old Marla Carter of Akron.

Officers responded to reports of an unknown emergency in the 300 block of East South Street around 11:52 p.m. After officers found Carter’s unconscious body with apparent gunshot wounds, they performed CPR on him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:20 a.m. Monday.

Officers discovered shell casings nearby and during a preliminary search of the area determined that a parked vehicle had been shot at least once.

Authorities are still trying to determine who shot Carter and why.
