Gene Autry Trail, Indian Canyon Drive closed at Palm Springs wash due to sandblasting

(This article has been updated with new information.)

Gene Autry Trail and North Indian Canyon Drive were closed in Whitewater Wash Monday afternoon due to high winds and blowing sand, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

Officers also closed the Gene Autry Trail between Salvia Road and East Via Escuela, as well as Indian Canyon Drive between Sunrise Parkway and Palm Springs Station Road, but there is no word yet on when it will reopen.

Vista Chino, which frequently closes for sandblasting, remained open as of 18:00

The closures come after the National Weather Service issued a wind warning of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph for the Coachella Valley from 11 a.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Weather officials warned that winds could blow around unsecured objects and knock down tree branches, potentially leading to power outages.
