Young Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi dies after serious training accident in northern Italy – ‘Tragic loss’

The International Sky and Snowboard Federation confirmed that Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi died after an accident during training.

The 19-year-old was training in northern Italy when he was injured during speed training at Val Senales in Alto Adige.

Grawand had an accident after training on the G1 circuit. Lorenzi was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Bolzano but did not recover. She was the sister of Lucrezia Lorenzi, another Italian skier who competed in slalom in the World Cup series.

Lorenzi was Italian junior champion in the overall and super-G competition last season and also finished 11th in the super-G at the FIS European Cup in St Moritz in December last year.

Lorenzi was part of the Italian army’s sports department as well as Italy’s junior women’s team. He died Tuesday morning.

FIS wrote: “The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) offers its deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Matilde Lorenzi.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Matilde Lorenzi, as announced by the Italian Ministry of Defense, which expressed its heartfelt condolences for the 19-year-old athlete of the Italian Army. The FIS joins the entire Italian winter sports community in mourning, including FISI President Flavio Roda and coaches, athletes, teammates, the federal council and all FISI staff.

“Matilde was tragically lost after falling during practice at the Grawand G1 circuit in Val Senales.

“FISI mourns and stands with her family, friends and all those who cared for Matilde, honoring her memory today and always.”
