Man sentenced to nearly 9 years in prison following 2023 road rage shooting, authorities say

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) – A man was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office said.

On Sept. 30, 2023, authorities said deputies were called to a single shot fired at a vehicle traveling southbound with two passengers on I-26 near mile marker 39.

Prior to the collision, the driver observed 29-year-old Zachary Desmond Stewart driving aggressively and pulled out his cell phone to take video of it. The video also shows Stewart shooting at the victim’s car from inside his vehicle.

Stewart was later arrested after crashing in Henderson County. Deputies found a .380 pistol inside his vehicle.

According to authorities, no one was physically harmed as a result of their actions.

During the hearing, Stewart pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, aggravated assault with a firearm into an occupied moving vehicle, and felony possession of a firearm by a felon.

He was sentenced to approximately 9 years in prison.
