Valley of the Sun YMCA educates children and teens with fake elections

PHOENIX (AZ Family) —Election day is just over a week away. Young voters are expected to make a big impact this year.

That’s why the YMCA is working to educate our younger generation about the voting process.

“Children are our future. Young people are the future leaders of our country. Our voters are next in line,” said Elise Nilles, deputy executive director of civic engagement.

Every election, kids ages 5 to 17 can go to any Valley YMCA and experience what it’s like to vote. There are realistic voting booths and ballot papers with the candidates we will vote for this year.

“We’re officially launching today, so all of our polling places in our locations are open to young people and they can then vote throughout the election. So our polls close just like election day,” Nilles said.

Although there is no actual voting, everything about these polling places is intended to be as realistic as possible. From the stands to the stickers students received after voting.

“Students can practice voting, navigate the options, and learn a little more about each candidate—from senators, judges, and corporate commissioners,” Nilles said.

This year, there will be 8 million new young voters with the right to vote. High school seniors like Ava Strichartz believe this is an important initiative.

“Not every nation has the opportunities we have. So to have that right and to have the power to speak up and really speak out about the things that are important to you, that’s what everyone should be doing, including our youth,” Strichartz said.

We hope this voting experience will help more young people get involved in politics and be more willing to share their voice.

“Go vote. This is a very important process. It’s your right and it’s something you should take advantage of because it will always be important,” Strichartz said.

The YMCA is also offering free child care to parents from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on election day, so you can get out and vote. To find a polling place near you, Click/tap here.
