Kansas City leaders hold town hall on crime

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There’s a town hall on crime Monday night, and business leaders across the city are looking for solutions to the problem. The event will take place at the Uptown Theater and kick off at 6pm in Midtown.

FOX4 spoke with a nearby business owner Monday morning about what he wants to hear from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department if he goes to the event.

“They’re actually going to do something about the crime,” Tailleur Restaurant Owner Heather White told FOX4 in an interview Monday.

White owns the restaurant on the east side of Main, as well as Cheval and Enchante The Bakery on the west side of Main. He says Tailleur has been attacked three times in the last nine months.

“As all our cameras on this road are closed due to the tram construction, so even though I have cameras on all my sites, if there is no camera footage on the outside, what’s the point, right? For example, I can’t give the police department any more footage.

Five panelists will be part of the town hall. These are Kansas City Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Dr. Derald Davis, Jackson County Circuit Court Acting Juvenile Clerk Monica Penrose, KC Common Benefit Programs Director Adam McClun, KC360 Administrator Gary Jones Jr. and KCPD Major Leslie Foreman.

“I say we do the best we can every day as far as financial crime is concerned,” Foreman said in response to White’s concerns in an interview with FOX4 on Monday. “You know, violent crime is obviously a focus, right? Last year was the year with the highest murder rate of all things, but we know that property crimes affect many more people. It’s not just a quality of life, it’s also about feeling safe in your own home, feeling like you can go to places in the neighborhood and that your car won’t be broken into or someone will attempt to break in so you end up with property damage.

Foreman says property crime is a lower priority call.

“We are showing. “We are getting the report,” he continued. “Often you know it takes longer than people want and I totally understand that, but it’s just based on a priority system.”
