Flathead Elections Department looks ahead to busy Election Day: What you need to know

KALISPELL — Election Day is right around the corner, and the Flathead Elections Office is preparing for one of the busiest election cycles they’ve ever seen. There are some things voters should pay attention to in the upcoming elections.

“Definitely be proactive. “If you have the time or the opportunity and you want to vote and you don’t want to wait for election day, you know, come sooner rather than later,” said Flathead County Interim Elections Director Paula Buff.

Anyone who needs to register to vote should try to do so before Election Day to ensure they have the opportunity to vote.
“We had a situation where I think a lot of people showed up. And you know, the longer you wait, the longer the lines are going to get. Come early, register, take care of business. It’s very important to vote this session,” Buff said.

Along with high voter turnout, there was a nationwide redistricting following the 10-year U.S. Census update. This affected voters by limiting the number of voters per precinct to 2,500 people, which added 14 new precincts to Flathead County.

“You know, people are going to see some differences in their ballots depending on what district they’re in. Their state representatives may or may not have changed, so in the grand scheme of things I think that’s an important thing. The grand scheme of things, you know, is that redistricting is a lot more than just how it affects people in elections, It affects them, you know, depending on who their representatives are, what kind of funding those districts get, it’s a much bigger picture than just elections.” – Flathead County Interim Elections Director Paula Buff

As always, absentee voters must sign their ballot envelopes. These ballots can be turned in in advance at the Flathead County Elections Office and at many locations throughout the county on Election Day, November 5.

As with all national elections, election offices across the state are poised to see record voter turnout.

“Our office is seeing more volume this year than we have seen in the past, and we are doing our best to get through this as quickly, efficiently and accurately as possible. So a little patience would be greatly appreciated,” Buff said.
