Daylight savings time: When should you change your clocks?

He’s back and no, we’re not talking about the Halloween costume in the bag in the basement. Also, thank goodness we’re not talking about elections, at least in this story.

We’re talking about the other thing that’s coming up in late October/early November: the end of Daylight Savings Time.

We’re falling an hour behind this weekend. Say goodbye to sunshine when you leave work. We won’t see this again until March when we reintroduce daylight saving time. But say hello to that extra rest hour!

Will daylight saving time ever end?

Not likely.

Sunlight Protection Act This law, which was unanimously approved by the US Senate a year ago, was a rarity in politics, and would end daylight saving time in the country.

But it went to the House, languished and never made it to President Joe Biden’s desk.

When will times change this fall?

Daylight saving time 2024 began on March 10, 2024, with clocks increasing from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.It will last until the early hours of Sunday, November 3, 2024When 2 a.m. becomes 1 a.m.

Which states do not observe daylight saving time?

The list of states and territories whose hours will not be changed on November 3 includes:

  • Hawaii
  • Arizona
  • Territories of American Samoa
  • guam
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • US Virgin Islands

Is daylight saving time implemented outside the USA?

Yes. There are other countries that practice daylight saving time.

Almost all of Europe participates in daylight saving time, except for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Iceland, Russia and Turkey.

Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean and parts of Australia also observe it. Egypt is the only country on the African continent that observes daylight saving time.

What would permanent daylight saving time look like?

Since daylight saving time occurs from March to November, a permanent version like this would primarily affect the winter months. For more than four months (October 28-March 5 to be exact) the sun would not rise after 8 a.m.

For 17 days (December 26-January 11) the sun did not rise after 9 am.

RELATING TO: How will Michigan’s sunrise and sunset change with daylight saving time?

Those who work a 9-5 work schedule will find that even the sun will have risen when they return from work, so their entire day at home will not be spent in darkness. But children would also ride the school bus in the dark for much of the winter.
