LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Family members of dead LAPD officers gathered Sunday to condemn the actions of city council candidate Ysabel Jurado, who was heard saying “F-cop” at a recent meeting.

A leaked audio recording of Jurado, who is running against incumbent Kevin de León for the 14th District seat, quoting lyrics from West Coast hip-hop group NWA’s song “F- Tha Police” during a meeting with students at Cal State Los Angeles has been leaked.

Jurado was asked about abolishing the police.

Jurado responded, “What’s a rap verse? F-cop, that’s how I see ’em.”

On Sunday, several widows, family members and girlfriends of fallen Los Angeles Police Department officers spoke out about their pain, anger and disappointment after hearing Jurado’s words.

Describing Jurado’s words as a “slap in the face”, Angela Mendoza said, “It is dangerous for someone who wants to serve on the city council to say these words.”

Mendoza’s boyfriend, LAPD Ofc. Fernando Arroyos was shot and killed while the two were house shopping. Arroyos was off-duty at the time, but said the attackers opened fire after seeing his police ID.

Jurado released a statement Sunday saying voters were looking for someone who would take a “new approach to public safety.”

“I understand the pain families feel following the loss of a loved one and have deep respect for anyone who has lost someone in the line of duty,” he said. “We can honor the memories of fallen police officers while pushing for accountability and equity in policing and real investments in our communities.
