2 dogs safe after burning house door kicked in by Robbinsdale police

A member of the Robbinsdale Police Department is known to have rescued two Australian Shepherd dogs from a burning house early Sunday evening.

According to the police department, officers and firefighters were called to a home in the 4200 block of York Avenue North just before 7 p.m. for a report of a house filled with smoke. Although the homeowner was not home, police determined that he could see the smoky building from interior cameras. There was no one inside near the dogs.

When police arrived, smoke was seen coming from the windows and officers attempted to find an open door or window to gain entry.

Later, neighbors standing in front of the home and talking to the homeowners on the phone told a member of the department, identified by Capt. John Elder as Sgt. Schoenhard was given permission to break down the front door to rescue the two dogs.

After Schoenhard kicked in the door, the two dogs “immediately came out” and were placed in the backyard of the home.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire in the basement. There was no major damage to the house.
