The Queen City Conquered, Identity Answered with Physicality

Sunday’s 37-17 win in Cincinnati exorcised the franchise demon for the Eagles and underlined how the 2024 team wants to play.

Philadelphia (5-2), which was tied 10-10 in the first half, dominated the second 30 minutes and turned a competitive match into laughter. It was the Eagles’ third straight win, coming early in the bye week, and was the team’s most comprehensive performance of the season.

Philadelphia was able to run and pass the football effectively, and after a rough start the defense was very strong against Joe Burrow, one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks.

Jalen Hurts finished the day completing 16 of 20 passes for 236 yards, one touchdown and a 132.5 passer rating. QB1 added three more TDs on the ground, while star running back Saquon Barkley finished with 108 yards for his second straight game with 100+ rushing yards.

The defense produced two turnovers — a C.J. Gardner-Johnson interception and Nakobe Dean’s fumble recovery — along with a big fourth-down interception in the fourth quarter on an interception by rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean that led to a field goal by superstar Ja’Marr Chase. . essentially extinguished all of Cincinnati’s hopes.

Here is the impressive performance of the weekly stock market:

TAURUS:

JALEN IT HURTS -Many have speculated that something is wrong with Hurts, but that notion seems to be waning. Sunday was the third straight game the Eagles quarterback had a 100-plus passer rating, and his efficiency on the run and throw against the Bengals made the Cincinnati defense look dominant in the second half.

“Jalen has put in the necessary work,” head coach Nick Sirianni said. “It’s something that’s not talked about enough. … The amount of time, how much he loves football and how much time he puts into this game. That’s what you want one of the leaders on your team to be, how much time he puts into this game, some things we’re not good at (in the bye week), some things we’re good at.” We were able to look at things and he put a lot of effort into it.

SENSATIONAL SAQUON: While most were zagging, spending big money on the running back position in the offseason, with the idea that Saquon Barkley would be a weapon, the Eagles were also zapping. Did Howie Roseman get this right? Barkley had 100 or more rushing yards in six of the first seven games, becoming the third Eagles to produce 100-plus rushing yards in six of the first seven games of the season, joining franchise legends LeSean McCoy (2011). Wilbert Montgomery (1979).

ENGST OF AFC: The Eagles are now 13-1 (a gaudy .929 winning percentage) in their last 14 games against AFC opponents. Philadelphia had the highest interconference winning percentage in the NFC (.765, 13-4) under Sirianni.

SECONDARY WEAPON: Grant Calcaterra, once Hurts’ teammate at Oklahoma, has developed into a solid complement in the passing game, while Dallas Goedert is recovering from a hamstring issue. While everyone focused on AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, Calcaterra was able to score gains of 19 and 28 yards as the Eagles gained traction in that portion of the offense. Calcaterra is really taking advantage of his limited opportunities, with five of his 11 receptions on the season being over 15 yards.

RESERVE BIG MEN: The Eagles entered Sunday’s game 40% behind their vaunted offensive line; Fred Johnson replaced the injured Jordan Mailata (on IR with a hamstring injury) and Tyler Steen replaced Mekhi Becton (concussion) at right guard. Despite this, the Eagles are playing their most well-rounded offensive game of the season; Barkley is over 100 on the field, while Brown and Smith are over 80 in the passing game. Despite being paired with star pass rusher Try Hendrickson, Johnson performed well and Hurts was not sacked on the play.

BEARS:

EXPLANATIONS – Much has been made of Philadelphia trying to establish “an identity,” something the Eagles coach tends to ignore.

“Identity is overrated. I really believe that,” Sirianni said. “What is identity? What is identity? And I’m telling you, I told you this is a band, our identity is playing with great detail. Our identity is playing with physical toughness and our identity is playing together, and everything else changes from week to week.”
