Giants’ Matthew Adams beat himself up over fumble sack

PITTSBURGH — No matter how many times he revised it, it always ended up the same.

The play had to be made and Matthew Adams couldn’t make it.

“As a competitor, just keep watching it and let it bother you,” Adams told The Post.

Oh yes, it hurt.

Matthew Adams missed a chance to sack Jalen Hurts during the Giants’ loss to the Eagles on October 20, 2024.

Adams, a 28-year-old linebacker who made the Giants’ roster this season because of his ability on special teams, played 31 snaps on special teams and just one snap on defense last week.

That lone hit came on the first play of the fourth quarter and the Eagles were up 21-3.

It was third-and-7 at the Giants’ 34-yard line, and Adams unexpectedly hit the gap and saw nothing but daylight in front of him.

There was a clear and unobstructed path to quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Adams ran and wrapped his arms around Hurts’ lower body, but missed what should have been a sack.

His stingers broke free, ran for 16 yards and ran down the right sideline On the play where cornerback Deonte Banks showed a distinct lack of urgency in not pursuing Hurts..

“It’s definitely balancing out,” Adams said. “He’s a good player, a strong athletic player, he makes people miss, he avoids, that’s a tough sack. You come up the middle, you come at full speed and he stays still, it just balances out when you’re making the play.”

“When I saw it was opening, I accelerated. It was just one of those things you had to finish. I’m definitely trying to wrap it up and figure out who the quarterback is, you know? “Respecting him and understanding that he’s a strong athlete, so you have to tackle him like a runner, he’s not a quarterback.”

Adams has been in the NFL since 2018. This would be his first dismissal.

“It’s just like adding fuel to the fire,” Adams said. “A lot of things weren’t going right that day and that added a little more excitement to it.”

Here’s another little cherry on top of Adams not playing.

The Eagles were 1-for-13 on third down conversions; Hurts escaped and picked up a solo first down. Four plays hurt, then sneaked a goal to complete a 28-3 rout of the Giants..

Whoever lines up at left tackle for the Giants – Josh Ezeudu or Chris Hubbard – will have to deal with Alex Highsmith, who has 21.5 sacks over the last two seasons.

Highsmith missed three games this season with a groin injury and returned to the field in last week’s victory over the Jets.

Rookie WR Malik Nabers had 39 receptions in his first five NFL games.

With a single catch against the Steelers, he will become the third player with at least 40 catches in the first six games of his career.

Puka Nacua (50 receptions in 2023) and Saquon Barkley (40 receptions in 2018) did it as rookies.
