‘I think it’s a no-no’: Gary Anderson urges darts chiefs to make rule change after European Championship defeat

GARY ANDERSON has called on darts chiefs to make a major change that could affect the way stars qualify for the World Championships.

Anderson, 53, is ranked 19th on the PDC Order of Merit, which determines players who qualify for the World Championships.

The two-time world champion’s lack of a higher ranking is due to his low activity on the European Tour stages.

Currently, points earned on the European Tour count towards the ProTour Order of Merit, where Anderson is ranked 13th and the top 32 also qualify.

However, Anderson called for ranking points earned on European Tours to now be ranked separately from other tours to prevent players not competing on those tours from slipping down the rankings.

He said: “Since they started putting Europe’s money in the general rankings (in 2016), it’s been difficult.

“You know, I haven’t raced the Europeans in eight years. And you have to remember that I’ve been in the top 10 in about six of the eight years while missing out on all the Europeans.

“So I look at it (that way), I did a good job of doing that.”

The Flying Scotsman returned to the European Tour this year and won an event in Sindelfingen. Germany In April.

Anderson was eliminated against Ritchie Edhouse in the quarter-final stage of the European Championships held in Dortmund at the weekend.

“But I don’t think it should be in the overall rankings. I think it’s a no-no.”

Those who have not competed or failed to qualify in European Tour events will have a better chance of qualifying for the World Championships.

However, this will naturally be counterproductive for those who are more successful on the tour.

For example, this year’s European Tour leader Martin Schindler is ranked 23rd in the Main Order of Merit.

But he could lose many points in this main ranking. Raymond van Barneveld and Gabriel Clemens was advancing ahead of him.

Grand Slam Darts It takes place in Leicester next month, with the Players Championship final a week later.

The World Championships will then take place in December through January.
