UN chief Antonio Guterres said he was “shocked by the distressing level of death, injury and destruction” in northern Gaza, where Israel has launched a new offensive that he says is aimed at preventing the resurgence of Hamas.

In a statement made by the Secretary-General’s spokesman, it was stated that “repeated efforts” to provide “essential” humanitarian supplies were rejected by Israeli authorities.

The statement said Mr. Guterres warned that the “widespread destruction and deprivation” resulting from Israel’s offensive “make the living conditions of the Palestinian people there untenable.”

“This conflict continues to be waged with little regard for the requirements of international humanitarian law,” the statement continued.

Mr. Guterres said all parties must “respect and protect civilians” and ensure humanitarian efforts are not hindered.
