Labor sacks MP Mike Amesbury after video shows him punching man in street | Politics News

Mike Amesbury was suspended by Labor after CCTV footage showed him punching a man in the street.

A Labor spokesman said: “Mike Amesbury MP is assisting Cheshire Police with their investigations following an incident on Friday night.

“As these investigations are ongoing, Labor has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party pending an investigation.”

A new video Obtained by MailOnline Sunday afternoon showed the Runcorn and Helsby MP punching a man as he fell to the ground, then striking him repeatedly.

Later, three members of the public were seen walking towards the two men and intervening.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “A 55-year-old man was voluntarily interviewed by police under caution in relation to this incident. He has since been released pending further investigation.”

A Conservative Party spokesman said: “Mike Amesbury has questions to answer about his actions and it is right that they are fully investigated.”

It came after the previous images. circulating on social media on Saturday.It showed Mr Amesbury shouting “you won’t threaten me again” at a man lying on the ground.

Mr Amesbury pointed at the man and added: “Yes I am (the MP), yes I am and you’re not going to threaten your MP again, are you?”

In a statement on Saturday, the MP said he felt “threatened on the street after an evening out with friends”, adding that he had “personally contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during this incident”.

“I will not be making any further public comment but will of course co-operate with any investigation if requested by Cheshire Police,” he added.

The force had previously said officers were called to reports of an assault on Main Street in Frodsham at 2.48am on Saturday morning.

Labor Party They had previously stated that they were aware of the incident and that Mr Amesbury, who has been an MP since 2017, would “co-operate with any investigation” by the police.

Asked whether Labor was investigating, Education Minister Bridget Phillipson told Sky’s: Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips program: “Mike Amesbury… contacted the police.

“He is cooperating with any investigation they want to take forward,” he continued. “This is a matter for the police and we want to let them do the job.”

Sky News has approached Mr Amesbury and Labor for comment.
