This free Spotify alternative is better for discovering music and is ad-free

Tired SpotifyAren’t new music recommendations taking you out of your playlist comfort zone, or aren’t you satisfied with how much you pay per month for your music streaming service? I fell in love with this amazing free alternative that everyone should have on their phone’s home screen: BBC Voices.

It’s an app that BBC Radio presenters won’t stop promoting on their shows, and if you’ve downloaded it you’ll know exactly why it’s there. best music streaming services.

As you’d expect from a radio app, you can use it to listen to a live broadcast of any BBC radio station; this includes Radio 1 to 6, the BBC World Service or any local station and others. Alternatively, if you are busy when a particular program you are keen to listen to is being broadcast live, you can browse the archive of the latest programs and join the program after the broadcast.

Catch up is how I keep up with my favorite shows: Artists of the Future With Sian Eleri, New Music with Jack Saunders Official CharacterT – which is usually hosted by Saunders. Great motivators for waking up in the morning or great music to make the time go by during my commute or errands.

And just like Spotify, if you’re worried a poor connection will disrupt your stream, you can download a program to listen offline later. It will remain downloaded until 30 days after it is first published, and you can listen to it in its entirety (music and all) whenever you want from this window.

If you’re not ready to give up on Spotify just yet – or Apple Music – there’s still a great reason to use BBC Sounds entirely. Every music show has a playlist, and clicking the three dots next to a song allows you to open the track on one of these two music streaming services. The only exceptions are special Live Lounge covers or very new tracks that haven’t been released yet.

The three shows I highlighted above are especially good for discovering new sounds. Sian Eleri and Jack Saunders are music experts; song selections and interpretations provide an in-depth understanding of why these are the best tracks to listen to today; Eleri’s show focuses on lesser-known musicians releasing fantastic new stuff. Saunders highlights the most popular songs of the moment, as well as the latest songs from famous names and artists who must be included in his two programs.

Their shows will jump from genre to genre without overwhelming you, and while I’m not a fan of everything they play, I’m always adding a few tracks to my ever-growing 2024 playlist. Apple Music that I know I wouldn’t have discovered without their advice. There are also artists among these snuts, Antony Szmierek, Master Peace, Remi Wolfand much more.

Humans beat algorithms

An algorithm would never make such bold recommendations; In my experience, I regularly only get recommended things that match my playlist – but people who live and breathe music can still find me something different that I absolutely adore.

Human hosts can also provide that additional context, like getting an idea of how a track came to be or how Saunders plays old tunes in his own song. new music show because it shows the episode’s featured artist’s journey to get to where their sound is today – this context then enhances my understanding and enjoyment of a piece and gives me an idea of what other tunes from its repertoire I might explore if I sang along. I am a stranger to them.

If you’re a fan of more specific song genres and prefer to stay in your lane, there are dedicated shows for almost every genre you can imagine.

I know I’m basically just describing radio in app form – that’s exactly what BBC Sounds is – but I’ve spoken to plenty of people who hate being stuck with their own playlists and can’t stand the boring recommendations put out by an algorithm. .

I’m writing this to collectively inform everyone that there is a great free resource on the App Store. Google Play StoreWhat you can and should use to get out of your musical rut. And maybe you can save some money if you decide to completely replace your preferred top music streaming service.
